One Afternoon

A concept from the Idea Engine notebook

What if applying to college took one afternoon?

Not a season of tabs, portals, re-typed addresses and the same essay bent into twelve shapes. One afternoon, with tea. You'd tell your story once; the busywork would sort itself; you'd go outside before dark.

It's an idea, not a product. Four quick questions tell us if it's worth building.

Take the four-question survey
A sunlit wooden desk by a window in late afternoon: a closed laptop, a mug of tea, a small succulent and a stack of blank index cards with a pencil.

The afternoon, sketched

  1. Tell it once. Your details, activities and story, entered one time in plain language.
  2. One core essay, honestly yours. We'd help you organize and check it, not write it.
  3. Pick schools. See what each one asks beyond the basics, side by side.
  4. Recommendations, requested kindly. One clear note to the people writing them, with dates.
  5. Money, mapped. A checklist of aid forms and deadlines, in order.
  6. Done for today. Everything that's left is on one calendar. Go outside.

What it wouldn't be: a replacement for any college's own application, a service that submits on your behalf, or a machine that writes your essays. It would organize what you already have, so you spend your energy on the parts only you can do.

Four questions

Tap an answer to move on. Nothing is charged; this tells us what to build.

1 Who are you?

2 What's the worst part?

3 If one afternoon could handle the busywork, would you use it?

4 Students would always use it free. For everyone else, what's fair?

We'll write only if it moves past the notebook, with an early look and a chance to shape it.
